Welcome!

The Quantile Framework® for Mathematics is a tool that educators are using to take the guesswork out of mathematics instruction. States across the nation are reporting Quantile measures for their students because Quantiles empower educators to utilize best practices in mathematics and meet the needs of ALL learners.

If you are a State Education Agency interested in understanding the Quantile Framework for Mathematics and how the Quantile Framework increases progress in mathematics, then you have come to the right place!

Overview

The Quantile Framework is a developmental scale that empowers educators to:

  • target instruction
  • forecast student understanding
  • improve mathematics instruction and achievement
  • forecast performance on high-stakes, end-of-year tests
  • identify resources to differentiate instruction

It demonstrates which mathematical skills a learner is ready for and which ones require further instruction. Teachers can then determine a student’s readiness to learn more advanced skills. They can also determine how likely a student is to successfully solve more complex problems, if provided with targeted instruction.

The Quantile Framework uses a common, developmental scale. This means no more confusing test scores or percentiles across differing assessments to compare! The Quantile Framework uses a Quantile measure to describe a student’s mathematical achievement and the difficulty of specific mathematical skills and concepts.

Now the mathematics curriculum, the materials used to teach mathematics, and the students themselves are all described with the same metric.

How Does It Work?

The process is simple. Once linked to a state end-of-grade assessment or norm-referenced test, the measures are made available to teachers in the form of a class roster from the student report. Then teachers can make educated decisions about the mathematical instruction needed in their classroom. We offer a suite of free on-line resources for teachers to differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of the diverse learners in their classroom. Understanding a Student's Quantile Measure

The Quantile measure on a student's report is a number followed by the letter Q. Measures range from EM, which stands for 'Emerging Mathematician,' to measures above 1400Q. The skills and concepts in the taxonomy are called QTaxons. These QTaxons cover all the skills along the mathematics continuum from what is typically taught in kindergarten through precalculus.

The Quantile measure for a student provides the following types of information for the educator:

  • where along the mathematics continuum the student currently lies
  • which specific skills a student is ready to learn next
  • what strengths a student has upon which new skills can be built
  • how difficult an upcoming skill in the curriculum is compared to the student's mathematical understanding
  • what level of success a student is expected to have on an upcoming topic or skill
  • when multiple measures are taken all year, a prediction of how that student will perform on high-stakes tests

When a teacher can make direct comparisons between the curriculum and what skills a student is ready to learn, they are empowered to set attainable goals for students to ensure progress in mathematics. Goals to ensure success, coupled with a common metric, allow every member of a student's learning environment (from guidance counselors to classroom teachers) to speak consistently about a student's progress.

Student Readiness + Task Difficulty = Mathematics Success!
